Post 1982 Air flow meter
Hi there, and hello! I've recently bought myself a 1982 928(which came along with a '84 928 as a parts car, but that's a whole different story). When I first got the car, we cleaned out the gas tank real good, charged the battery a bit, and, without any major problems at all, started it flawlessly. However, it doesn't run flawlessly by Porsche means, I'd reckon. After reading around on the web and pdf'd 928 shop manuals for troubleshooting, I'm almost 94% sure(So 93% sure? lol)that it needs a new air flow meter. I've found some refurbished ones online.. Ebay and such. Anyway, enough rambling.. I figured I'd post a wanted ad on here. So, get'at me if you have one for sale, or know of any respectable websites that sells them at a competitive rate!

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the board. Make sure you post pics of your 928's in the Pictures Forum. I would see if 928 International has some good used ones. They test them and back them with a warranty so your not left out in the cold if you buy one from eBay.

Best to post more details of the problems before spending money.

Quite the delayed response... I've been busy, busy, busy! Sadly not busy on the progression of 928dom. Anyway, during the past few cold months, I've just been stockpiling parts that I figure are needed, or undoubtedly absolutely have to be changed. Parts that I have, but haven't had time to begin playing with (By 'playing with' I mean install, of course) include: all new vacuum hose(s); new(Re-manufactured) air flow meter... Went ahead and got one, found a seemingly cheap one W/ a year warranty(probably take five years before I get to put it on, as it seems..) and of course... a k&n air filter! I also got a pretty good deal on one of those 3pc dash overlay, but it seems that the dash itself just needs to be re-wrapped in leather (I'll make a decision on that on down the road). The interior is a complete wreck, too. I plan on posting pics soon enough, but I mean... they're not going much eye candy yet... so don't ridicule...!! haha! I have installed a new fuel pump... gave the ignition a tune up, I've taken a few individual engine parts off and cleaned them a bit and have rightfully given it a well deserved (And absolutely post due) oil change, along with all other fluid changes. The next thing to buy is new water pump and timing belt. I noticed a small crack in it, so I plan on changing both at once just to save time. And shoot far, after I work some magic with some paint and get the interior to my liking, this sucker will be a collector's item, lol!! -Now where is a 21 year old college boy to find such funding....? Enough! Hopefully by this coming Sunday(If anybody is reading this, or cares in general) I will have pics uploaded in the picture forum. By the way, I tend to ramble... I've been preconditioned to do so, really.

Fortunately Ramblers are allowed here, even if the topic is Porsche.

Not a lot of K&N fans among owners. Shop I go to puts one or two in the trash every month and switches the owners back to factory paper filters, but mostly that is only an issue with the hot wire MAF cars.

Chances are good when you do the timing belt, you will also need to rebuild the tensioner and replace the cam gears.

Selling blood plasma and having no social life are great ways to spend more on your 928. ;) Or you could graduate and start making big bucks.

(I counter your ramble with some poking of fun)

Yeah, I read a few mixed responses on the web arguing about k&n filters, but I found a new one for about 25 bucks (Give or take a few cents) and decided to give'r a go. The extending day light is opening me some tinker time for my beloved toy, luckily! Soon I'm going to get that engine out of it and do all of the maintenance work. I plan on doing the timing belt, cam gears, and tensioner job (just as you recommend) and I'll put a new water pump. Many more plans while its out, too! Haha, I might have to start selling plasma... and/or other helpful, but sellable parts within... to afford all that I want! Plus, I'm to eager for a little 928 finesse in my life than to wait until I get those diplomas!
I finally went out and started it this weekend after it sat for entirely too long (about 3 months, I'd say)! It surprisingly, to me anyway.. didn't hesitate too awful much, either! Oh, and I went through all of MPDano's restoration project and it gave me some pretty good ideas. I feel like this project I'm engaging is more or less the same as his was. I'm probably going to go the same direction on many things, I believe.

My '79 928 had a K&N when I bought it. It seemed a little flimsy and I always had trouble getting it to seal properly. I replaced it with a stock paper filter and no problems since.

The oil vent into the airbox blew more oil into the intake than any K&N could ever release, do the later model MAF cars have a different crankcase vent setup?

FWIW, I have a '94 Ford Ranger that's coming up on 250K miles and I'm still using the same K&N I bought for it 16 years ago. So I'm a big fan of K&N's, just didn't care for it on my 928.
